10 Years in London

Exactly 10 years ago we had landed in London to start this crazy adventure! It is so scary that 10 years have already gone by. I still remember our first week’s daily “meetings” in Leicester’s Square Burger King like it wasn’t that long ago.

If you have moved to a different country then you will know it is not an easy feat. It has been quite an emotional journey.

On our first few days in London we would sit down in Burger King at the end of the day to go through the highs and lows of the day. That kept us grounded and helped overcome the fear of not succeeding. I would also call my grandmother to check in and to let her know that we had survived another day in London.

Those were difficult times but together we got through all the challenges. Soon we settled down and started exploring our new city and other UK cities. We also planned our first holidays to go back to Portugal.

Job and house hunting was very different from what we expected. I would say a lot more challenging. Thankfully it took us only about a month to get our first jobs which was not too bad. But they weren’t great ones. We moved into our first long-term room after about three weeks and shared the flat with a great guy.

We lived in Willesden Green. My first job was at Itsu in St. Johns Wood selling sushi and my boyfriend’s first job was at Nero in Regent Street. As you can see nothing too fancy.

The next jobs popped up soon enough which allowed us to have some peace of mind and a little more money in the bank. I was a temp in a sales team selling plane parts and my boyfriend started working for Cineworld.

Our first trip back home was in September 2008 and by then we already had so many experiences to talk about with friends and family.

After that we only moved house twice and in 2013 we finally moved on from all the house sharing madness. I changed jobs quite often and even had the guts to start over in a new industry about 5 years ago. My boyfriend changed jobs once and is now working close to home too.

London has offered us so much over the years. Yes, the weather is pretty crap but the opportunities in this city are something else. We have learned so much, met some incredible people and visited places we had never even heard of before.

We truly discovered our love for travelling and went on a few trips over these last 10 years.

2008 – Portugal twice
2009 – Portugal four times, one of those Madeira and Porto Santo
2010 – Portugal three times and Nice
2011 – Portugal twice, Sri Lanka and Menorca
2012 – Portugal three times and Menorca
2013 – Portugal three times and Greece (Athens, Milos, Santorini and Mykonos)
2014 – Portugal twice, Amsterdam, Ibiza and Belgium
2015 – Portugal twice, Switzerland, Villefranche-sur-mer, Paris and Menorca
2016 – Portugal three times and Crete (Greece)
2017 – Portugal twice, Menorca, Copenhagen, Lanzarote, Furteventura and Amsterdam
2018 – Currently in Portugal

Not sure if I have missed any trips but I could count 49 trips in our first 10 years in London which averages about 5 holidays a year. Not too bad!

Looking forward to the next 10 years!

London Series: Year 3 (2010)

Everyone came to stay with us in 2010! Mónica, Joao and Dé and Ricardo! We had our first trip to the Cote D’Azur. Spent great times in Portugal, partied a bit and had the most random NYE.

January 2010 was a good month that saw snow, one of my long time friends visit us in London , nights out, nights in and cakes.

February was celebration time for Valentine’s, his birthday and pancakes.

We got drunk in March.

But before getting drunk we visited Nice for the first time and Monaco, Cannes, Eze and Ile Sainte-Marguerite.

We welcomed Joao in London in April. I had my first tonsillitis when he was here but that didn’t stop us having a great time. There was sunshine at the park, marble cake and a crazy night out.

Not much happened in May.

In June we had visitors in London, celebrated my birthday and went to a RATM free gig. After all that we went to Portugal to spend quality time with family and friends in some of our favourite places.

Partied in July.

And again in August!

Explored London and cooked a roast dinner in September.

parks, food and Portugal in October.

Bowling and silly selfies in November.

December was a busy month! First cupcakes, Coca-Cola truck, Renata’s leaving party, snow, Guanabara and us.

Short break in Portugal.

NYE was a memorable one in 2010.

2010 was a pretty good year! Hope you enjoyed the tons of pictures in this post. 2011 coming soon.

In the meantime if you have missed it you can go check 2009 in pictures.

London Series: Year 2 (2009)

The year I took my best friend to Portugal, my brother came to London and we visited André in Madeira! 2009 was a memorable one.

2009 started in a party mood having my work Christmas party a little out of season. We went out to the enjoy the London park life in Hendon and Hampstead Heath and strolled in central London.

February was eventful with drinks at work, a lot of snow, Valentine’s day, my boyfriend’s birthday in Southend-on-Sea, Carnival at Guanabara and some London shots.

In March we went to central London, walked through Epping forest, fed squirrels in Hyde Park, got drunk at Guanabara and watched stand up comedy in Portuguese in Brixton.

April was super special as I took my best friend to Portugal. We had the best time!

In May we visited Little Venice and Cambridge.

June saw my brother in London, I had a great time on my Birthday and we went to Portugal to celebrate our anniversary.

July was fun, I went to the pub and to the roller disco with the work lot.

August was sunny and wet and we enjoyed it at the park.

September was the month we visited André in Madeira and had a blast.

In October we were tanned and it was time for a “bad taste” house party at Filipa’s and to make sushi at home.

November was another sushi at home month, we went to Camden and watched more Portuguese stand up comedy in London.

December is the month for all the Christmas parties. In 2009 we spent Christmas in Portugal again.

Another great year! Loved you loads 2009. Hope you all enjoyed all the silly selfies. Brace yourselves for more from 2010 coming soon.

London Series: Year 1 (2008)

This year in March is my 10 year anniversary of moving to London! Can’t even believe it has been this long. To celebrate I will be creating a “London Series”. I am sharing the highlights of each year in pictures.

On the 4th of March 2008 I moved to London with my boyfriend. We had no job and no bed to sleep in but we didn’t give up!

In March we had a couple of new homes after sleeping on the floor for a week at my auntie’s place. First one was in Kilburn and the second one in Willesden Green.

Settled down in our new place, April was a month to explore Brighton and London.

In May we visited Windsor, had the crazy idea of going to France for lunch, got a tan in Hyde Park and spent a weekend in Southampton!

In June the Euro was on so we watched a fair bit of football and celebrated Portugal day at the park eating sardines.

In July we moved to Hendon, went on a day trip to Winchester where we met Tochas (a famous comedian in Portugal) and enjoyed another Summer day at the park.

In August we didn’t do much.

September was a great month. We went back to Portugal for the first time to spend time with family and friends.

In London we were tourists again and partied hard.

October was another busy month. I organised my best friend’s birthday, visited Oxford, went out bowling with friends from my new job, went to Southfields to spend time with André, went out for drinks and it snowed!

In November we went to a Karaoke place with the Portuguese group and I went bowling again with the work lot.

December was a busy month with all the festivities.

And we went back to Portugal for Christmas and NYE.

This was 2008 in pictures. It was a very special year. I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane and I am looking forward to going back to 2009.
