One Year of Portraits

Can’t believe it has already been a year since I got into shooting portraits! In August 2017 I accidentally got into portrait photography. I got a message asking if I could shoot some fitness themed portraits and even though I had zero experience I said yes.

I have always been into photography and owned a few digital point and shoot and even film cameras over the years. Mostly I was shooting landscapes or just documenting my life by taking pictures of what was happening around me.

In May 2015 I bought my first DSLR, a Canon EOS 100D. Shortly after that I bought an amazing 50mm lens which I still use as my main lens. Shortly after I got into portraits I upgraded my camera and got a Canon EOS 200D which is the camera I use now. This is still a very basic, entry level DSLR but I get pretty decent shots with it.

If you are thinking about getting into photography just remember that you don’t need to have the most expensive camera available on the market to get good results. I would show you some examples of bad shots taken with super expensive gear but that would be a little rude.

To prepare myself for my first paid shoot I attended my first photography meetup. This was just another “accident” as I didn’t go looking for it. I got invited by someone that used to work with me and it being before the shoot was just a happy coincidence. It was a little stressful but I loved the experience.

In the last 12 months I have attended 11 photography events and taken thousands of portraits. It has been quite a ride. I have learned so much and still feel I have tons more to learn. Also I have made new friends and met some really cool people along the way.

Here are the events I have attended so far:
UK Portraits Summertime, August 2017 – My First Photography Meet Up
UK Shooters Halloween, October 2017
UK Shooters and Boosted Boards, April 2018 – I Need Another Weekend
UK Shooters in Canary Wharf with Sony, April 2018 –  I Need Another Weekend
Lensminds Paddington, May 2018 – Photography Meetup Season
Lensminds Night Photography meet, June 2018 – First Night Photography Meetup
UK Shooters in Brighton with BA i360, July 2018 – My First Meetup Outside of London
The Portrait Mission Summer meet, August 2018 – Another Summer Meetup
UK Shooters Samsung event, August 2018
London 4 All Portraits meet in Camden, August 2018 – Slide and Meetup Weekend
We Shoot Humans first meet, August 2018 – Rainy Meetup

In this time I have also shot with a model on a one to one basis and really enjoyed the experience. If I had more free time I would definitely do it more often.

To end this post here are some of the shots taken in the last 12 months. If you are curious about the whole process of shooting portraits you can also check more about my photography workflow here.

I have loved doing this throwback post on my portrait photography history. Hope you enjoyed it too!
